New Virtual Learning Center opens in Johnstown, providing 60 computers for online learning

This year has been challenging for many students as they navigate online learning due to COVID-19.

That's especially true for those who don't have computers, WiFi, and the other resources they need to learn.

One organization in Cambria County is giving local students what they need to stay ahead this school year.

Sisters Sha'Kia and Shale are students at Greater Johnstown, and COVID-19 has taken a toll on how they learn.

Sha'Kia says she learns better in the classroom, but since her classes are online, it makes school more difficult.

"I understand more in school than I do when I'm doing it at home," she said.

So, the sisters have been coming to the Flood City Youth Fitness Academy's new Virtual Learning Center that was unveiled last week.

"We don't want to see any kids get left behind. Because of what's going on in our country - in our community right now - that is happening. We're helping to bridge that gap, so that won't happen. Our doors are open to anyone," said Oscar Cashaw Sr., one founder of the project.

They've obtained 20 computers and 40 laptops for online learning, along with mentors to help the kids, like Alayjia Croft.

"A lot of them get frustrated, and they get overwhelmed. Just be patient, (and they need to) have a schedule," Croft said.

The organization partnered with AmeriServ and The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies to make the space happen.

"Our big goal is we want to see these children not fall behind educationally, but we also want the children to learn life sustaining skills. We want them to learn respect. We want them to understand there are people in the community who really care about them," said Deacon Jeffrey Wilson, another founder of the project.

He says the organization has other resources for children in Johnstown, including gyms, a boxing ring, music studio, and nutritional center -- to give all kids the same opportunities no matter where they live.

"To all the parents in the Greater Johnstown area: if you don't have access to equipment or WiFi, you can bring your kids down here and engage them in what we have. We have people down here that will help them," said Cashaw.

The organizers of this program say if there are any new COVID-19 guidelines or restrictions that come into effect, they'll find a way to adapt and adjust for the kids.
