Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — A teacher with the Hollidaysburg Area School District is facing public scrutiny after she reportedly brought a copy of the "controversial" book "Gender Queer" to her classroom.
School officials confirmed to 6 News that they received complaints that the junior high teacher had displayed the book on her desk.
District Superintendent Robert Gildea says that the school "directed" the teacher to not bring the book back to school and adds that "additional corrective action is being considered."
According to a letter sent to parents, Gildea clarified that "the book has never been part of district curriculum, is not part of our library circulation, and we have no evidence that the book has been read to or shared with students."
Dear Junior High Parents, The intent of this message is to address a narrative being portrayed via social media regarding the book, Gender Queer. The book was in the possession of a teacher and visible on the teacher’s desk. This was brought to the school administrator’s attention who, in turn, directed the teacher not to bring the book to school. Additional corrective action is being considered. I am of the opinion that the book is disturbing and not appropriate for children of any age. Please note, the book has never been part of district curriculum, is not part of our library circulation, and we have no evidence that the book has been read to or shared with students. Please feel free to contact administration if you have any additional concerns regarding this or any book. The book, which is described as a graphic memoir about sexuality and coming out, has been the center of controversy for the past few years as schools around the country have worked to ban the text from curriculums and libraries.
