There was a time when rock angst was a thing for men. They are the ones who are not afraid to use it to open their souls and express their indignation towards those who want to listen. Then came the 1990s with women like Melissa Etheridge, Tracy Chapman and the woman described as the Queen of Alt-Rock Angst, Alanis Morissette.

Morissette is a Canadian singer, record producer, and actress who has become very famous for the strength and emotion she provokes with her music. She began her career in the early 1990s and has since become a force to be reckoned with in the alternative rock genre, thanks to albums such as Shredded Little Pill which has sold over 33 million copies worldwide.

Alanis Morissette – Biography

The Canadian singer was born Alanis Nadine Morissette on June 1, 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Of Irish, French and Hungarian descent, she was raised by her parents, Alan Richard Morissette, a French teacher, and Georgia Mary Ann, a secondary school teacher and principal.

Alanis has two siblings, Wade Imre Morissette who is her twin brother and Chad Morissette, the eldest. Just like his twin, Wade is also a musician, while Chad is an entrepreneur.

Because her parents worked with the army, Alanis spent her childhood traveling to different places, including West Germany, where she lived for three years. When she was 6 years old, her family moved back to Ottawa and that’s when she started learning to play the piano. A year later, in 1981, she took dance lessons.

Raised as a Catholic, she had her primary education from Holy Family Catholic School and then moved to Immaculata High School. Then she went to Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa where she graduated from high school.

Even before starting her music career, she appeared on the Canadian television show You Can’t Do That before going to college.

In 1987, Alanis released her first demo, Destiny Remains With Me followed by her debut album, Alanis in 1991. Her next album, C’est le temps came in 1992, followed by Jagged Little Pill in 1995. The album sold 33 million copies worldwide – the best-selling album by a female artist only after Shania Twain. Come here the one sold over 40 million.

Her next albums are Supposed Old Junkie Craze (1998), Beneath the Swept Carpet (2002), So-called Chaos (2004), Flavors of Intricacy (2008), and Havoc and Bright Lights (2012).

Husband

Morissette had several relationships in the past, she eventually met and married her husband, Mario Treadway, also known by his stage name, Souleye. In the early 1990s, she struck up a relationship with actor and comedian Dave Coulier. The relationship did not last long before the end. Many believe that it was for Coulier that she sang You must know which has become the song of rage for all broken women. More than 20 years after the release of the song, the legend is still relevant even if the singer has kept silent.

The next person she had a relationship with was fellow actor and comedian, Ryan Reynolds, whom she met in 2002. In 2004, they announced their engagement which was later called off three years later. It was following her grief over the relationship that she released her seventh studio album, Flavors of Intricacy in 2007 with the hit Torch specifically for the actor.

In 2009, she started her relationship with her now husband, Souleye, who is 6 years younger than her. In 2010, the alternative rocker and the rapper tied the knot in a private ceremony at their Los Angeles home.

The union is blessed with two children, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway, born in 2010 and Onyx Solace Morissette-Treadway, born in 2016.
